SMH: Distribution or Reaccumulation After the Selloff?

SMH is trading in a high-level, wide consolidation after the strong April–June advance. Since July, however, the volume-price structure has shifted: supply has become more visible, and the ETF has printed a potential Sign of Weakness.

The most important bar came after several weeks of decline. Weekly volume expanded to roughly 2.34x average, yet price did not decisively break the 500 area and closed with a lower wick. That is evidence of buying interest and partial supply absorption—but it is not enough to confirm that demand has regained control.

My current read is therefore conditional rather than simply bullish or bearish:

- Bullish condition: SMH needs to reclaim 587 with expanding demand and then prove that the recovery can hold on a lower-volume pullback.
- Bearish condition: A decisive high-volume break below 503, followed by a weak rebound that fails to recover the breakdown area, would strengthen the distribution thesis.
- Invalidation: The reaccumulation candidate is invalidated if the 503 area is accepted below on strong supply and cannot be reclaimed.

The next test matters more than the first bounce. A controlled, lower-volume retest would support the absorption thesis; renewed expansion of supply near the lows would point toward a genuine breakdown.

The full report compares SMH with NVDA and TSM, maps the multi-timeframe structure, and includes the complete key-level decision tree and risk plan:
