The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation is expected to send out letters to U.S. large banks asking for information on whether they closed customer accounts or denied people service on political or religious grounds as soon as this week, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing a person familiar with the matter.

The regulator could ask for information that could go back a number of years, the report said.
